Who was Real Sam Bahadur?
Sam Bahadur, or Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, was born on June 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab. His father, Hormizd Manekshaw, was a doctor, and he belonged to a Parsi family who moved from Gujarat to Punjab.
Sam’s parents had six children: four sons and two daughters. Manekshaw was selected as part of the first batch of cadets. Called “The Pioneers”, his class also produced Smith Dun and Muhammad Musa Khan, future commanders-in-chief of Burma and Pakistan, respectively.
After completing his training, he joined the British Army in 1932, at the time of World War II. Later, after India’s independence, he joined the Indian Army and trained and prepared the army for the India-Pakistan war in 1971.
He was known for his exceptional leadership skills and courage. He played a major role in marking the success of the Indo-Pak war. He was also awarded various accolades, like Padma Bhushan, the Military Cross, and Padma Vibhushan.
He was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pak war in 1971. He was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in the history of the Indian Army.
