Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus “Ponniyin Selvan- Part One” graced the cinemas on Friday, the dream project of the director has been in the making for a while, and as per the reports, it has taken an earth-shattering start at the box office.
It is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s cult novel of the same name and is set against the backdrop of the Chola Empire from 947 CE-1014 CE. It boasts of powerhouses Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aiswarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

Biggest Day 1 for a Tamil Film
The excellent advance bookings had set the stage for a blockbuster opening of PS-1 at the box office. And now, as per the maker’s claim, PS-1 has taken the biggest ever start for a Tamil film at the box office worldwide.

Box Office Collection Day 1
As per the TN box office tracker Manobala Vijayan, it clocks Rs 25.86 crores in the home market Tamil Nadu to become the 3rd highest opening day grosser of 2022 there, after Beast and Valimai.
As per Manobala, PS1 stands at no. 3 position in the list of Top day 1 grosser Tamil movie list of 2022, after Valimai (₹36.17cr) and Beast (₹26.40cr).

PS-1 Advance Bookings Reports
As per the trade reports, PS-1 beats the Vikram day 1 advance bookings, recording a huge 8.79 ticket sales worth 16.82 crores. Out of which Rs 14.33 Cr is from Tamil version alone, followed by Telugu Rs 1.84 Cr while Hindi and Malayalam had minimal sales. In the PVR Chain PS-1 draws in an advance of 2 lakh tickets for the opening day.

Ponniyin Selvan-1 Budget
Ponniyin Selvan is a two-part film that is said to be made with a massive 500 crore budget, as the first has been released in all 5 Indian languages, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. We hear the second part of the movie will be released in mid-2023, as during a recent media interaction, Mani Ratnam said that Part 2 has already been kicked off and they are looking at a gap of 6-9 months after the PS-1 release.
Ponniyin Selvan-1 Screen Count
PS-1 has witnessed a wide release, it is said to be released on 700-800 screens in TN and has occupied 550 theatres in the two Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The theatrical rights of the PS-1 have been sold at Rs 10.2 crores in Telugu states and the break-even target is set at Rs 10.50 crores.
