For the first time, Netflix launched a cheaper, mobile-only version of Rs199 monthly for Indian users watching on a single screen.
Netflix announced a special ‘Made In India’ subscription plan for India only. The latest plan is the cheapest version of Netflix available anywhere in the world.
It is priced at Rs 199/month for single screen viewership only in SD or Standard Definition version at 480p.
It is a mobile-only package where subscribers can enjoy Netflix shows and films on a smartphone or tablet only.
Unlike the basic plan, the mobile-only plan will not support offline downloads. According to reports, besides India, the Netflix executives are testing the cheaper plan in other parts of the world too.
Previously, it was reported that the ‘Made In India’ plan would be priced at Rs 250/month. But, it was finally priced at Rs 199/month in competition to other OTT platforms like Hotstar, Amazon Prime and ALT Balaji etc.
This move is aimed at increasing the user base of Netflix which significantly dropped in the US.
According to Ajay Arora, director, product innovation at Netflix said that more Indian users sign up and watch Netflix on mobile than anywhere else. Hence, the cheaper plan launch seemed like an obvious decision.
Netflix said in a statement that they are investing heavily in Indian films and TV series as they see potential growth in a country where Indians spend 30% of their phone time and 70% of their mobile-data on entertainment.
As per reports, Netflix has been working on 13 new films and 9 new series for the Indian audience.
Currently, Netflix offers a basic plan of Rs 499/month, standard plan of Rs 649/month and the premium one being Rs 799/month.
