What is B.Tech?
The full form of BTech is Bachelor of Technology.
Before we discuss the engineering disciplines in detail, lets understand what engineering & technology actually mean:
“Engineering is the branch of study which uses scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other things, including bridges, dams, roads, vehicles, and buildings”
“Technology is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used for the development of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives or any task”
In simple words, we can say that, by adopting engineering & technology we can solve any problem or any given task which may be of a complex nature with great accuracy & efficiency.
B.Tech Career Scope & Job Prospects
In a developing country like India, the growth and expansion of industries is enormous, and the demand for skilled engineering graduates is always on the rise. B.Tech graduates can find employment in both domestic and international markets.
“In India, more than 2.5 lakh engineering graduates are employed in the private & public sector. Engineering is one of the top job providing sectors in India & around the globe.”
As a graduate in technical subjects, one can find opportunities in non-engineering sectors. Because almost all industries nowadays rely on technology, the demand for engineering and technology graduates is always higher in fields such as banking, medical, education, pharmaceutical, and so on.
Engineering specialization
There are many engineering specializations. Aspirants can choose specialization as per their interest & passion.
IIf you are interested in computers and programming, then Computer Science engineering is the path to take. Similarly, if you are fascinated by large buildings, bridges, modern architecture, and dams, then Civil engineering is the path to take. Some of the most popular engineering specialisations include:

Data Science | Plastic Engineering |
Electrical and Electronics Engineering | Production Engineering |
Electronics & Communication Engineering | Robotics Engineering |
Telecommunication Engineering | Software Engineering |
Eligibility Criteria
The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing B.Tech or B.E. is to have:
- Passed or appearing 10+2 (class12) with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics Subjects
- Candidates should have English and any two other subjects in class 12th.
- For biotechnology or Biomedical engineering candidates with PCB subject group are also eligible.
- The minimum percentage of marks required is 50 to 70% (aggregate), which varies from college to college.
- For lateral entry B.tech, candidates must have a 3 year diploma or Polytechnic.
- There is no age criteria prescribed by JEE Main but some universities might have an age limit up to 24/25 years.
B.Tech Admission Process
The admission to B.Tech programme is done on the basis of engineering entrance exams, some of the prestigious engineering entrance exams are listed below:
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
- BITSAT
- VITEEE
- SRMJEEE
The most common, and widely accepted engineering entrance exam is JEE Main, conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is held every year for admission to IIT’s, NIT’s, CFTI’s, state government aided & private engineering colleges of the country.
The student who qualifies JEE Main can appear for JEE Advanced which is conducted for admission to IIT’s.
There are many university entrance exams like BITSAT conducted by Birla Institute of Technology & Science for admission to its B.Tech/BE programmes, similarly some of the well-known university entrance exams are VITEEE, SRMJEEE etc.
B.Tech Entrance Exams
For admission to the top engineering colleges, one has to qualify the engineering entrance exam. Some of the most popular entrance exams are:
JEE Main: JEE Main is the national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by NTA. Every year more than 12 lakh candidates appear for the JEE Main exam. The candidates who will qualify the JEE Main exam will be eligible for admission to the NIT’s, CFTI’s, State & private engineering colleges of India.
JEE Advanced: Candidates can appear for JEE Advanced after qualifying JEE Main with under 250000 all India rank, The examination is held every year by IITs on a rotational basis for admission to the IIT’s.
BITSAT: It is a university level entrance exam through which candidates can get admission into B.E, B.Pharma. & M.Sc. Programmes of BITS campuses located in Pilani, Goa, & Hyderabad.
VITEEE: It is a university level examination. VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is conducted for providing admission in various B.Tech programmes at VIT University.
SRMJEEE: SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE). This is a university level entrance examination. It is conducted every year to provide admission in B.Tech programmes of SRM University.
Admission Fee
The admission fee for B.Tech courses varies from college to college. In the government aided colleges the admission fee is comparatively lower as compared to private colleges.
State Government Colleges Fee – Rs. 20,000 – 60,000 per annum
Private Colleges Fee -Rs. 75,000 – 3,00,000 per annum
Scholarships
Many universities also provide scholarships to the students, for availing the scholarship candidates have to fulfill the eligibility criteria. Some common scholarships offered to the students are:
- Scholarships based on Board Percentage/JEE Main Rank

B.Tech Course Curriculum & Syllabus
For the first year of all engineering curriculum, the syllabus is more or less the same. Some common subjects which are being taught in every engineering specialization are Engineering Mathematics, knowledge of Computers & Basic Programming, Professional Communication, etc.
From the 2nd semester or sometimes in the 2nd year the syllabus changes as per the specialization one has opted for. For computer science students the subjects will be Data Structures, Computer Architecture, Computer Networking, C++, Java etc. Similarly, every specialization will have its own subjects from the 2nd year onwards.
The B.Tech curriculum is divided into both theory and practical work, candidates will have to undergo practicals from the 1st year onwards. The practical work not only gives hands-on exposure on how things actually work, but it feels more interesting & students are able to grasp more knowledge with this.
Higher Studies – What After B.Tech?
After completing B.E. or B.Tech candidates can go for higher studies like M.Tech master of technology or master of engineering. The course duration for M.Tech is two years, where the candidate can choose any specialization of his choice based on his B.Tech stream.
For pursuing M.Tech one has to clear the GATE exam which is the Graduate aptitude test in Engineering. GATE is conducted every year for admission to M.Tech courses across all Government & private engineering colleges in India.
